Who Walter Daum Really Is
By Michael P. Tremoglie (04/19/04)
At a town hall meeting at the City College of New York, Walter Daum - who has been variously identified by the media as either a former dean of the college or a retired math professor - heckled Kerry telling him there was little difference between he and President Bush about the war in Iraq.
Daum claimed that we are engaged in an imperialist war in Iraq. He said that people hated George Bush, and they were going to hate John Kerry too, because he is no different. Daum also claimed that we destroyed hospitals and mosques in Iraq. Finally, Daum said the Iraqis hate us.
No doubt Daum spoke for many who will vote for Kerry. No doubt Daum is an idol to many “pacifists” or “antiwar” people. However, Daum does not speak for the Iraqi people. He does not even speak for the American people. Why he thinks he does is a function of Duam’s arrogance. An arrogance that is all too common among leftist academicians.
So who is Walter Daum. Is he a pacifist? Does he believe Iraq is a victim of American imperialism? Does he agonize about innocent Iraqi casualties?
What the media did not tell you about Walter Daum is that he is a Trotskyite. He is a member of the League for the Revolutionary Party (LRP) and the editor of its magazine Proletarian Revolution.
The LRP wants to reestablish the 4th International. The Committee of the Fourth Internationale (COFI) believes,“The revolutionary vanguard party represents the most advanced class-conscious layer of the working class. Since the working class must be independent of all other classes, the vanguard party is the party of only one class and centers its work within the working class. The vanguard party in each country must be a section of the re-created Fourth International, the World Party of Socialist Revolution.”[1]
Daum is part of the vanguard. In other words, Daum believes he is one of those who is chosen to lead the average worker into the Promised Land. He feels he is one of the few who is intelligent enough to do so. Daum thinks the average person is too stupid to act in his or her own best interest. This is why Daum thinks he can shout at an elected official and presidential candidate. This is why Daum can lie with conviction in front of an audience and on national television.
This is the same Walter Daum who once said that America was responsible for the terrorism of September 11. He was quoted in the New York Post on Oct. 3, 2001 as saying: "The ultimate responsibility lies with the rulers of this country, the capitalist ruling class of this country."
This is the crux of the matter with Daum and people like him – including his fellow liberal professors.
They hate the United States of America because we are a democratic, capitalist nation. It is doubtful that Daum is worried about hospitals or mosques or innocent casualties. Were he so concerned; he would not have rationalized the 3000 killed on 9-11 as being the result of capitalism.
Notice Daum’s hypocrisy. It is not Hussein’s belligerent policies that caused Iraq. Yet it is our financial policies that caused 9-11.
Daum lied so easily when he stated that we were bombing hospitals and mosques in Iraq. He knows full well that there has never been an intentional destruction of a mosque or hospital or school or any other nonmilitary building.
The facts are that our brave military personnel have paid a heavy price for avoiding bombing hospitals and mosques. Our soldiers and marines have died in order that we do not kill innocent people. No other military power in human history as done as much to avoid innocent casualties as our military.
Bomb hospitals and mosques, indeed!
If we wanted to, we could carpet bomb Iraq. We could turn the entire country into a beach volleyball court. We could exterminate the Iraqi people – and nobody could prevent it.
Bomb hospitals and mosques?
Quite the contrary, we are building mosques and hospitals. We are spending so much money on healthcare in Iraq that President Bush’s opponents are saying we are more concerned about healthcare in Iraq than we are in the United States.
Iraqis hate us? No doubt some do. I am sure the Baathists do – what is left of them.
The only people who hate George Bush are the Trotskyites like Daum. They hate him because they hate capitalism. Feminists hate Bush too because he does not like abortion and the feminists want to be able kill partially born infants. Trial lawyers hate him because he wants to eliminate frivolous lawsuits.
There are a lot of people, like Walter Daum, who hate George Bush – and it is a good thing people like Daum hate Bush - because if Walter Daum is anything he is a fraud.
