Stop Glorifying Sicko Hunter Thompson
By Dave Gibson (08/22/05)
The strange and tragic life of writer Hunter S. Thompson was celebrated once again over the weekend. His widow Anita along with actor Johnny Depp, set up a Hollywood-style event in which guests sipped champagne and watched as Thompson's ashes were shot from a fist-shaped cannon. Even ex-presidential candidate John Kerry was in attendance...Enough already!
Hunter Thompson found fame as a freelance writer and author. He found admiration from the left as a champion of the 60's counter-culture, drug abuser, and Nixon-hater.
On February 20, 2005, Thompson placed a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. His wife Anita was on the phone with him, as he shot himself. She told the Aspen Daily News: "I was on the phone with him, he set the receiver down and he did it." Even more disgusting, his daughter-in-law, and grandson were in the very next room. It was the last incredibly selfish act in the life of a truly self-absorbed buffoon.
When I first heard the account of Thompson's suicide, I was astounded that any man could subject his family to such an act. The devastation which is felt by the survivors of one who has taken their own life is immense. Carrying-out that terrible act in the company of one's family is truly evil.
Can you imagine the last memory of your grandfather being that of hearing him blast a bullet into his head?
Thompson did not have a terminal disease, nor was he on the brink of losing all of his worldly possessions. He was simply bored and too cowardly to face the onset of old age.
Following Thompson's suicide, an army of liberal columnists began to heap praise upon him. While his family certainly deserves our compassion, Thompson himself deserves nothing more than our disgust.
There are an average of 30,000 suicides every year in the United States. Holding this man up as some sort of left-wing role model is indicative of the liberal 'culture of death.'
Abortion, suicide...it's all good.
