Who's running in 2006, Hillary or Bill?

The New York Times has an article outlining the events of both Jeanine Pirro and Hillary Clinton during the New York State Fair. The newspaper focused the majority of the article on the fact that Hillary had Bill Clinton in tow, and Jeanine didn't have her husband there. Keep in mind, the last two years Bill did not attend either.
It's being claimed that Jeanine is not bringing her husband due to his law problems. Specifically the 11 months he spent in federal prison in 2000 for a conviction of tax fraud. While I can understand the definite negativity of that reflecting on the campaign as a whole, why there was emphasis on which person had their husband tagging along makes no sense.
Of course Hillary is going to bring Bill to any important function. He's the only reason anyone in the country knows her name. She's been riding his coattails since the beginning, why would we not expect this? It's also interesting how the issues, and resolutions of each person seem to be overshadowed by the husbands of the candidates.
Jeanine is focusing on the constant failures of Hillary in the past. This should be plenty to knock Hillary off her pedestal as it is. She is losing ground in the most recent poll. She fell to 55-34 in August, from 57-31 in the Siena poll. Unfortunately Jeanine is also facing a growing number of people that disapprove of her from 27 to 26.
Has the Clinton machine played it's hand in this case? Why is this is the topic of conversation instead of stances on the issues, track records of the candidates and promises for the future? That's what these rallies use to be about. Times have changed since Hillary showed up. Unfortunately for the worse.
