The Victims of Communism Memorial

The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation link here is working its way through the red tape required to get design approval for its Memorial site at Massachusetts Ave., N.W. and New Jersey Ave., N.W. Washington, D.C. I have posted a copy of the design, which is on the right. Click it for the larger picture. The cost of the memorial will be about $700,000, of which the Foundation has raised $350,000 so far.
It is across from Georgetown University Law Center and will have a clear view of the U.S. Capitol. The most important part of the memorial is a 10-foot bronze replica of the "Democracy" statue erected by Chinese students in Tiananmen Square in 1989 and based on our own Statue of Liberty. Radiating from the stature are ten charcoal black radians, each representing 10 million victims of communism. One inscription will read: "To the more than one hundred million victims of communism and to those who love liberty."
This is close to the 110 million victims I calculated, as you can see from my democide table below.
In practice, communism was the greatest socio-political experiment the world has ever seen. It was a mammoth test of applied Marxist-Leninism in twenty-three countries with different religions, cultures, races, and histories. And failed utterly in all its pretensions. Its cost in human lives is only part of its human burden, and the 110 million only part of the toll. Uncounted are the suicides, and premature deaths; unmeasured is the daily fear of these enslaved billions, their wretched unhappiness, and their resulting medical and psychological problems.
Yet, still yet, we have our home grown communists, who hiding behind the theoretical sounding label of "Marxist" teach or demonstrate in favor of their failed ism, and try to impose it on the rest of us. To understand how they can be the ideological equivalent of flat earthers is to realize that communism is their religion -- it has its priesthood and holy books, its view of heaven and hell (capitalism), its religious certitude, and above all, its faith.
