History Doesn’t Repeat It Rhymes
Taxes piece by Robert R. Owens (6/3/11)

A series of imperial wars fought by the Kings of England culminating in the French and Indian War(1) almost bankrupted England.  At the end of the war England was paying to maintain 10,000 troops in the North American colonies as well as fleets to protect America’s maritime trade.

Relax with a ‘Gone-Fishing’ Portfolio
Investments piece by David John Marotta (6/2/11)

MAROTTA ON MONEY - Summer is almost here. It’s time to go fishing or take a trip or do wherever else you enjoy while on vacation. Unless your interests lie in investment management or you have a trusted fiduciary watching over your investments, consider having a portfolio designed to allow you more time to relax.

Joseph Biden’s Abuse Fantasy Tour
Domestic Violence piece by Carey Roberts (5/31/11)

What is it with Democratic vice-presidents who embrace radical schemes, and then do complete a U-turn on the truth in order to mislead and alarm the citizenry?

Global Warming News from the Brits
Global Warming piece by Dennis T. Avery (5/29/11)

CHURCHVILLE, VA - My colleague Bennie Peiser, of Britain’s Global Warming Policy Foundation, offers some of his latest man-made global warming news:

Memorial Day - A Tribute To Those Who Fell
History piece by Thomas D. Segel (5/29/11)

Harlingen, Texas, May 30, 2011:  Memorial Day, it has been with us in various forms since the end of the Civil War.  Since that time there were localized versions of this special day across the country.  The first report of an observance is recorded as a time when widows of the southern soldiers decorated the graves of their fallen husbands.  In 1966 it became an official United States holiday. The purpose of the holiday has always been to pay tribute to those who fell in battle or died while wearing the uniform of their country.

Palestine -  Jordanian Land Grants - Not Israeli Land Swaps
Middle East piece by David Singer (5/28/11)

President Obama has been widely praised since his speech to the State Department on 19 May when he stated: “We believe the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states.“

A Workaround For The Windows Install DVD:  Error Code 5
Computers piece by Malcolm T. Hedges (5/26/11)

Some are getting “Error Code 5” when trying to install Windows Vista and/or Windows 7.  I found a simple workaround that may solve your problem.

Cost of Living Is Beginning to Rise
Money piece by David John Marotta (5/26/11)

MAROTTA ON MONEY - The Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA)(1) for the past two years was 0.0%. The COLA legislation was passed in 1973 to ensure that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits would keep pace with inflation. Many other entitlements plus private- and public-sector employee salaries and benefits have become attached to the annual COLA computation.

‘Fin de Regime in Syria?‘
Middle East piece by Daniel Pipes (5/26/11)

The revolt in Syria offers great opportunities, humanitarian and geo-political. Western states should quickly and robustly seize the moment to dispatch strongman Bashar al-Assad and his accomplice. Many benefits will follow when they reach their appointed dustbin of history.

Awash in a Sea of False Allegations
Domestic Violence piece by Carey Roberts (5/25/11)

Washington has been buzzing over the case of Sean Lanigan, a P.E. teacher in suburban Virginia who was accused of sexual molesting a 12-year-old girl. The jury acquitted Lanigan in less than an hour, one juror reportedly weeping in sympathy with Lanigan for lack of evidence.

‘Are Climate Models Lying About Food Too?‘
Food piece by Dennis T. Avery (5/24/11)

Computer models at Stanford University have just “told” us that man-made global warming has already sapped some of the yield potential from our food crops. They say wheat yields would have been 5.5 percent higher since 1980 without the earthly warming; corn yields would have been 3.8 percent higher.

Why opposition against voter ID is indefensible
Elections piece by Robert E. Meyer (5/23/11)

Recently the legislature in the state of Wisconsin passed a law requiring ID to vote, with certain specified exceptions. Many people have voiced their opinion opposing requiring voter identification. I have trouble understanding those objections.

Bogus Sex Scares Used to Ban BPA - The BPA File, Part Five
GreeenIsm piece by Alan Caruba (5/22/11)

Over the course of the first four elements of The BPA File, we have documented a massive, global campaign to ban bisphenol-A, BPA, a chemical that has been safely used for more than a half century to protect metal and plastic containers for food and liquid against spoilage and the resulting hazard to health.

Oil ‘subsidy’ and ‘tax breaks’ nonsense
Progressivism piece by Guest: Paul Driessen (5/21/11)

Think repealing oil industry tax incentives will increase federal revenues? Think again. - President Obama frequently says Americans “need to end our $4 billion in annual taxpayer subsidies to oil companies.“ The latest Democrat bill would have repealed some $2 billion of what Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) and others call “subsidies” and “special tax breaks” for Big Oil.

‘Dear Federal Gov’t, Who Do You Think You Are?‘
States Rights piece by Warner Todd Huston (5/21/11)

One of the main forces behind the Tea Party movement and the disgust that many Americans have with the federal government is its supreme arrogance and its constant unwanted and unwarranted power grabs. This is one of the things that the American people really need to put their attention toward reversing.

Big Brother Bubba’s Ministry of Internet Facts
Information Police piece by Warner Todd Huston (5/19/11)

Bill Clinton wants the government to “correct” what you say on the Internet, folks. Should the government listen to the former panderer-in-chief, we’ll go from Big Brother to Big Bubba on the ol’ Internet tubes.

Revenge Of The ‘Ruling Class’
Ruling Class piece by Christopher Adamo (5/19/11)

On May 10, 2011 a Wyoming grassroots organization created a political firestorm within the state’s Republican Party by sending an e-mail to its office holders that asked two highly inflammatory questions, along with a declaration of its intentions to publicize any responses to those questions. Furthermore, having dealt for years with the standard liberal tactic of officials who dodged queries of this type by simply ignoring them, the organization also advised recipients that non-responses would be regarded as negatives.

The United States of Stupid
EdukShun piece by Alan Caruba (5/18/11)

In 1983, the National Commission on Excellence in Education released a report titled “A Nation at Risk” that documented nationwide failure in American schools. Not much has changed since then and the federal takeover of school curriculums and testing methods has mercilessly continued with the Bush administration’s No Child Left Behind and the Obama administration’s Race to the Top.

The American Flag Is “Offensive” in Schools Now
EdukShun piece by Selwyn Duke (5/17/11)

Increasingly, it seems that the American flag is joining toy guns and dodgeball on the banned-from-school list.  And the latest story on this front involves The Butterfield Elementary in Orange, Massachusetts, where a teacher told an 11-year-old boy that he may not hang his depiction of Old Glory because it might “offend” another student.

Corn For Ethanol - A Study In Stupid (Revised)
Food piece by Thomas D. Segel (5/16/11)

Harlingen, Texas, May 16, 2011:  It was ten years ago that I started writing articles on the use of corn for producing ethanol.  I thought it was a dumb idea.  Today, even some of the left leaning media are starting to join the naysayers about corn-based ethanol.

Quit Scapegoating the Oil Companies!
Progressivism piece by Doug Edelman (5/15/11)

Democrats in congress love to beat up on the oil companies: those “evil mega-corporations that make obscene profits and gouge us poor consumers.“  But while that populist meme might gain them a few polling points with the assistance of a complicit press, any objective analyst of the facts will have to call BS on the entire premise.

The Fannie Mae Mess
Progressivism piece by Alan Caruba (5/11/11)

It was a relatively short Wall Street Journal article(1) on Saturday, May 7th. “Fannie Mae Falls Back Into the Loss Column.“

Libya - Making Sense of the Intervention
Foreign Policy piece by Guest: Chris Clancy (5/10/11)

We’re nearly two months into it now. Like most people I was left scratching my head when the UN announced that it would intervene in Libya.

Revisiting the Advice to Buy Real Estate
Money piece by David John Marotta (5/10/11)

MAROTTA ON MONEY - In 2010 I published a column entitled “Now’s Still the Time to Buy a House.“ Investing is like chess in slow motion. It is important to review your moves to see how they turned out. Sometimes they don’t turn out well. Our prediction about real estate, however, was brilliant.

‘Iraq - A Province of Iran?‘
Middle East piece by Daniel Pipes (5/10/11)

After American forces leave Iraq at the end of 2011, Tehran will try to turn its neighbor into a satrapy(1) (i.e., a province, a satellite state) to the great detriment of Western, moderate Arab, and Israeli interests.

DiMaggio: Fifty-Six at Seventy
Sports piece by Aaron Goldstein (5/10/11)

Last Saturday night, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier was unable to collect a base hit against New York Mets pitching. (1) Prior to that game, Ethier had compiled a 30-game hitting streak. Had Ethier managed to get a hit he would have tied the Dodgers club record set in 1969 by Willie Davis.

BRICS Want To Rely Less On The U.S. Dollar
   Dollar piece by Offsite (5/5/11)

BRICS is an abbreviation for the five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. - In the past few weeks, I have written several articles about the United States dollar and the driving forces behind the ongoing devaluation of it.

Aligning Your Money and Your Values
Money piece by David John Marotta (5/5/11)

MAROTTA ON MONEY - A common temptation is to judge our well-being not by what we have but by how much we have compared to others. Families at today’s poverty level live as well as the upper middle class did a few decades ago. Nevertheless, they still feel deprived. Luxuries ultimately disappoint us as we become accustomed to a higher standard of living. An indulgent purchase loses its luster, and the satisfaction it brings is fleeting.

Ten Thousand Commandments
   Government piece by Offsite (5/3/11)

An Annual Snapshot of the Federal Regulatory State - The federal government primarily funds its programs in three ways. The first is to raise taxes to pay for new programs. The second is to borrow money to pay for them (with a promise to pay back that borrowed money, with interest, from taxes collected in the future). No matter how controversial government spending programs can be, taxpayers can always see how much programs cost by looking at the federal budget, and Congress can be held accountable for programs that are controversial. While not perfect, such accountability is a fundamental, necessary condition for controlling government.
